Mapping the Road to IaC Maturity: Key Insights and Adoption Trends

In the ever-evolving world of cloud computing and DevOps, organizations are increasingly turning to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to manage and provision their infrastructure. But where do companies stand in adopting this transformative practice? Our inaugural StackedUp: IaC Maturity report reveals how much of companies’ infrastructure is represented in code and examines the maturity of their provisioning and deployment processes. 

Key Findings:

• IaC Adoption: Only 3% of organizations have fully transitioned all infrastructure to Infrastructure as Code (IaC). Meanwhile, 37% have most of their infrastructure in code, and 51% have some portion of it. Ten percent are still in early-stage pilot projects.
  
  
• Maturity of Processes: Only 13% of respondents report full maturity in IaC adoption, with fully automated provisioning and deployment across environments. Another 39% consider their processes “established,” while 42% are still working toward consistency, and 7% are just getting started.
  
  
• Cloud vs. On-Premises Adoption: Cloud environments are more likely to have higher IaC adoption, with 63% reporting significant usage. In mixed cloud and on-prem environments, adoption drops to 25%, and on-premises-only environments report 28% adoption.
  
  
• Expertise Gaps: One-third of respondents believe they or their organization are highly knowledgeable about IaC. Most (60%) still view their expertise as a work in progress. Executive-level respondents express more confidence in their knowledge compared to infrastructure and development teams.
  
  
• Distribution of Responsibility: IaC responsibilities are widely distributed. DevOps and Platform Engineering teams handle most of the writing and maintenance of IaC (79% and 78%, respectively), but development, IT/Cloud operations, and security teams also play key roles. Only a third of organizations have a single team responsible for writing or maintaining IaC.

These findings show that while many organizations have made significant progress in adopting IaC, they still have plenty of ground to cover. The journey toward full IaC maturity is ongoing, with many companies refining processes and expanding expertise. As IaC adoption continues to rise, ensuring consistency, security, and ease of use becomes even more critical. By understanding where they currently stand, organizations can better strategize for the future, ensuring that their infrastructure is not only automated but optimized for long-term success.
